Jhunjhunwala Family

March 8, 2020 11:12 AM

One of the more interesting side notes from the tourney is a team with the name “USA 4 Brothers.”

This is not only a team name, but literally it is four brothers; Jhunjhunwala Krishan, Jhunjhunwala Ramesh, Jhunjhunwala Naresh, and Jhunjhunwala Suresh.

Team USA 4 BROTHERS

Their father and their family name come from India. Of the six brothers in the family, these four play chess seriously. It is the four brothers’ first time Prague and they are impressed with how beautiful the city is.

The four brothers were inspired to start playing chess after the 1972 World Chess Championship between challenger Bobby Fischer of the United States and defending champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. The match took place in Reykjavík, Iceland and has been dubbed the Match of the Century. Fischer became the first American born in the United States to win the world title.

After living in Hongkong, family moved to USA in 1983.  Krishan now lives in Arizona, and the other three brothers in California.

Now that Krishan is retired, he finally has time for chess. He played WSTCC two years ago in Dresden and his idea was to play here in the Prague World Senior Team Championship with his brothers.

Krishan has big chess plans for the future; he will play in November in the World Senior Championship in Italy. His dream is to become a Grand Master, but knows how hard it is to reach that level.  But now that he has more time for chess, he is hopeful.  Krishan said: “Chess makes you sharp. Everybody tells me that I am too old to achieve my dream, that this goal of GM is impossible.” But he added: “Why not? I will try!”  We wish the four brothers the best in their games, and to Krishan good luck fulfilling his big dream.

Maybe I will get to interview him ten years from now and find out if his dreams have come true! :-)
